To Raise €100,000 for Soul of Haiti Foundation
This May bank holiday weekend, 156 cyclists took part in Cycle4Haiti 2011 to raise €100,000 for the Soul of Haiti Foundation. Cycling enthusiasts and novices alike cycled for approximately 11.5 hours over two days to complete the 225km cycle from Dublin’s G.P.O. to Eyre Square, Galway.
This year, a team of local cyclists from One Direct, based in Athlone, completed the challenged and raised almost €XXX for the charity.
Last year, the €40,000 raised through Cycle4haiti went directly to support the development of Soul of Haiti Foundation projects including the provision of a brand new roof for an orphanage in the South of Haiti called Il a Vache.
The first leg one saw the convoy pass through through the towns of Leixlip, Maynooth, Kilcock, Enfield and Kinegad, where they took a much needed break to refuel and then continued on through Kilbeggan and Moate before settling in Athlone for the night. Passers-by showed their support with beeps and cheering along the way.
The second leg on Sunday saw the team rally through Ballinasloe, Aughrim, Kilreekil, Loughrea, Craughwell, Oranmore and onwards to Galway where they reached their final destination of Eyre Square at the earlier time of 3.50 pm – 45mins ahead of schedule thanks to a strong easterly wind that was on their backs all the way from Dublin .
A number of other well known businesses and familiar faces took part in this year’s event including teams of novice cyclists from An Post, O2, Ernst and Young, One4all, Central Bank, Netwatch and Jacobs Fruitfield.
Michael Dawson, One4all CEO says “The level of support for Cycle4Haiti this year was phenomenal; it is really encouraging to see how so many people got involved. At times the cycle was tough but the beeps, cheers and encouragement from passers-by lifted our spirits and kept us going. It is one small challenge that can help make a big difference to the lives of people in Haiti.”
Isolde Moylan of the Soul of Haiti Foundation; “We’re delighted to be working with One4all again this year on such a fantastic event. The enthusiasm and determination of the One4all team and the cyclists to help our efforts in Haiti is inspiring and we’re so grateful to everyone who is involved.”
